Environmental Action JUDAISM AND THE ENVIRONMENT
We have completed our Second Eco-Bag sale and have mostly good news to report. Because of the economy, we did not get many multiple bag orders, but we did have sufficient profits to “Go Green” in our Shul Kitchens. The new cleaning supplies will include eco-friendly dishwashing and general cleaning products which Reggie will also use for general Shul cleaning. We also hope to have recycled products, e.g., paper plates and napkins and recyclable plastic cups, available for Shul functions. We are also greening our Shul office with the use of recycled copy paper and other supplies as needed. The above are all small steps that we can also do in our own homes and that, of course, was what the Eco-Bag sale was all about. The Environmental crisis that we now face is one of the major moral/spiritual challenges of our generation. Our tradition teaches us that we need to respond with both individual and communal actions and I believe that Traditional Congregation and its members have been good role models for what can be accomplished. Kol Hakavod! Other recycling news for your use:
Alan
Elfanbaum Recycling Bin. The paper recycling bin is in the Northwest corner of the parking lot. We want to thank all the members of the congregation who have made the effort to help fill up the bin each month. We collect almost two tons of paper per month in the Donohue Recycling Bin in our parking lot. According to the World Wildlife Fund, each ton of recycled paper saves: 17 trees, 3.3 cu. yds. of landfill space, 7,100 gallons of fresh water, and 4,100 kwh of energy. This congregational commitment is not primarily being done for the money that it brings in (max. $5.00 to $10.00 per month) but rather as part of our effort to set a good example for our children and each other. We are known as the "Green Synagogue" in the St. Louis Jewish Community and hopefully our actions show we are concerned about the health of this beautiful planet that is our common home. Together, we can hopefully pass it on intact and whole to those who follow us. For information on how to participate in recycling efforts and to be part of our "green" commitment, get in touch with Alan Elfanbaum, Chairman Environmental Action - Chesed Committe, 314-576-4236.
