Jewish Fund for Human Needs
Our Jewish
tradition of tzedakah is clear: we are required to perform mitzvot
for Jews and non-Jews in need (Leviticus 19:34: “The stranger...shall be
unto you as your home-born: you shall love him as yourself.”).
The Jewish Fund
for Human Needs (JFHN) is one vehicle in the Jewish community for performing
this mitzvah. The goal of the JFHN is to provide an organized Jewish presence
in non-Jewish, direct relief agencies that provide assistance to individuals
facing critical human problems such as, but not limited to, hunger,
homelessness, abuse, lack of health care and unemployment. These agencies must
provide their services on a non-denominational basis. Founded in 1985, the
JFHN is a joint project of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) and the
Rabbinical Association (RA) with major funding from the Jewish Federation of St.
Louis and its Lubin-Green supporting foundation. The JFHN also relies on
individual donations.
The Fund serves a
unique role in the Jewish and general communities. It is the only agency in St.
Louis whose mission is providing Jewish visibility in interfaith philanthropic
efforts. For most of the organizations receiving grants, the Fund represents
the first and only organized Jewish involvement. As a result, the JFHN enhances
interfaith relations and shows the interest of the Jewish community in making
St. Louis a better place in which to live.
Since its
founding in 1985, the Fund has awarded grants totaling over $640,000 to
approximately 155 St. Louis area organizations. At the December Meeting,
$26,000 was allocated to 13 agencies including Centenary CARES, The Mildred
Brady and Rena Martin Charitable Eye Foundation and Webster-Rock Hill
Ministries.
