Tzedakah Opportunities

Old Ink Cartridges Taking Up Space?

Bring your used printer and copier cartridges to Traditional.  Alan Elfanbaum brings them to Office Depot for recycling, and we receive gift cards that we can use to purchase office supplies for Traditional.  It’s a win for the environment and a win for our budget, so your support of this project is greatly appreciated.  Just drop your used cartridges in the collection box outside the office.  Thank you!

Jewish Fund for Human Needs

Our Jewish tradition of tzedakah is clear: we are required to perform mitzvot for Jews and non-Jews in need (Leviticus 19:34:  “The stranger...shall be unto you as your home-born: you shall love him as yourself.”).

The Jewish Fund for Human Needs (JFHN) is one vehicle in the Jewish community for performing this mitzvah.  The goal of the JFHN is to provide an organized Jewish presence in non-Jewish, direct relief agencies that provide assistance to individuals facing critical human problems such as, but not limited to, hunger, homelessness, abuse, lack of health care and unemployment.  These agencies must provide their services on a non-denominational basis.   Founded in 1985, the JFHN is a joint project of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) and the Rabbinical Association (RA) with major funding from the Jewish Federation of St. Louis and its Lubin-Green supporting foundation. The JFHN also relies on individual donations.

The Fund serves a unique role in the Jewish and general communities.  It is the only agency in St. Louis whose mission is providing Jewish visibility in interfaith philanthropic efforts.  For most of the organizations receiving grants, the Fund represents the first and only organized Jewish involvement.  As a result, the JFHN enhances interfaith relations and shows the interest of the Jewish community in making St. Louis a better place in which to live.

Since its founding in 1985, the Fund has awarded grants totaling over $640,000 to approximately 155 St. Louis area organizations.

For further general information or to donate household goods to these agencies, please contact Marilyn Ratkin, Jewish Fund for Human Needs Consultant, at 314-442-3873 or visit our website: www.jfhn.org.

The Jewish Food Pantry

For the month of May the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry is looking for these specific items in order to provide well-balanced nourishment for the community in need:

  • Canned Tuna
  • Dry Pasta or Rice Mixes
  • Hearty Soups
  • Peanut butter
  • Canned Pasta with Meat
  • Canned Fruit
  • Canned Chili/Beef Stew
  • Personal care items

Items should be placed in the grocery cart in our lobby or brought directly to the Food Pantry.

Currently, the Jewish Food Pantry is feeding over 3,500 individuals in a month. They have an increase of 48 percent in new clients. The need is great so please help in any way you can. Thank you.  For further information, please contact Louise Levine, 636-227-1259.

The birds need food, too!

Donations of wild birdseed would be appreciated to feed the birds who use our bird feeders.  Please bring to the office and give to Micky.  Thank you.
